To Work or Not To Work
For some students, getting a job while they are still in high school is not an option. Working seems to be a necessity for them, as they might not get any help from their parents to pay for tuition or for living expenses. Therefore, they may not have any other choices but to accept a part- time job. However, working is not the only option if there are some better alternatives to help them.
There are several ways that students can attempt to get the necessary funds that they need, to pay for tuition, and living expenses. Student loans, grants, and scholarships are the best alternatives that students should turn to. Instead of working part time while going to school, attempting to win scholarships will not take much effort. They had better take the challenge to compete for scholarships than working. Moreover, it motivates students to keep striving to perform their best at schoolwork. On the other hand, not many students have the opportunity to compete winning the scholarships. Taking the same efforts, students with average grade might have less opportunity to win. Therefore, working through school is a valid option. Finding a way to budget your time between school and work can take some effort, but it’s much easier than most students think. All the students need is discipline. With minimal effort, students should have no trouble striking a balance between work and school.
The bottom line is that working part-time while going to school can easily be done, if students are disciplined and budget their time accordingly.
However, there are actually some better ways to overcome students’ financial problems.

A Ban on Cell Phone Use at the Wheel:
Motorists to Face Jail Terms for Using Cell Phones
There have been changes in the policy of charging careless drivers (in London). Motorists caught talking on a hand-held mobile phone or sending a text while driving could be jailed under the charge of careless driving. In the most serious cases they could be charged with dangerous driving, which carries a two year minimum sentence and unlimited fine. Such a type of charging is applied in response to growing public concern over drivers using hand-held phones.
Against the ban, some people believe that driving while calling is generally a safe practice. Then, it is a bit difficult to charge one caught talking on a handheld mobile phone or sending a text while driving to face jail terms. They argue that cell phones are no different from any other distracted driving – like eating, drinking, putting make-up, shaving, smoking, and talking to back seat passengers.
In spite of this, the ban needs to be enforced. It is according to the fact, stated by Department for Transport, that drivers are four times more likely to crash if they are holding a mobile or sending a text while at the wheel. The ban does not cover hands-free phones, but drivers who use them can still be charged if police think they’re not in control of their vehicle. Statistics already show that the real distraction is the conversation, even if it is hands free. As it has been statistically proven that hands free conversation is a distraction, so the current laws is toughened.
Along with the debate on banning cell phone use at the wheel, there has been made a system called ‘Cell Phone Block While Driving’. This system is a device that prevents people from using a cell phone by the driver while car is moving. If the car is stopped for any reason, (red light, parking, etc.) a cell phone will work. If in motion, a cell phone doesn’t work. It is believed that the best use of the resources is in making cars safer and implementing auto reactive features that can take over for the driver, not in limiting the driver’s options.

Low-Cost Airlines
Before 1999 flying in Indonesiawas too expensive for many people. Buses, ships, and trains were probably the alternatives to travel. People would probably take long journeys on buses or ships or both. In 1999 the first Indonesia’s low-cost airline was established. The low-cost (or no frills or budget) airlines had begun in the early 1990’s in the USA. The term low-cost doesn’t always refer to the price of the ticket. Low-cost refers to the operating costs of the airline.
These airlines can operate more cheaply than other airlines because they usually only use one or two types of aircrafts, so the cost of training staff is cheaper. Employees sometimes have to work in two jobs-the flight attendants sometimes clean inside the aircraft after each flight. Since 1999 several mode budget airlines have begun flying in Indonesia.
As a matter of fact, the emergence of discount carriers has enormous benefits for travellers. Middle class-people, who could not afford full fare, would pay for cheaper seats. They now can afford to fly by getting affordable ticket price. It’s not a surprising fact that many people prefer taking these no-frills airlines than spending more money to travel on planes. Moreover, early ticket booking allows people to get cheaper price of tickets. Usually there’s no free in-flight food or drinks. Even though passengers do not get free food or drinks, most people do not matter that.
However, bad safety records have been showed by airlines in Indonesia. The idea is so much supported by a number of plane crashes that mostly happened to low cost airlines. In the past three years, an Indonesian low-cost airline vanished without a trace; another plane cracked open upon landing; a flight overran the runway in Yogyakarta and caught fire, and another discount aircraft went off a runway in Java. Indeed, Indonesia may be the scariest nation in Asia for fliers.
            Travelling by plane is the best alternative to reach the destination with no time and energy consuming. However, safety is something to take into account, instead of spending less money.

Bird Flu : A Presentation
Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen.
First of all I would like to thank the committee of the seminar who has given me an opportunity to share some information about a disease currently spreads in many parts of the world.
Ladies and gentlemen, bird flu is a deadly disease. Unless an infected patient is treated appropriately and quickly, the patient may die of the disease soon. In addition, the disease can spread very quickly as well. If the spread of the disease is not stopped, mankind will be in danger.
In this seminar I’d like to address the issue by discussing five points. First, I’d like to talk about what avian influenza is. Second, I’d like to look at the role of birds in spreading avian influenza viruses and then its outbreak in poultry and the countries affected most by the outbreak. Finally I’d like to discuss the implications of the virus spread for human’s health. To end my presentation I will make some concluding remarks.
Well, let me start with the first point. What is avian influenza?
Avian influenza or “bird flu” is an infectious disease of animals caused by viruses that normally infect only birds. Avian influenza viruses are highly specific to certain species, but on rare occasion, have crossed the species barrier to infect humans. Avian influenza viruses cause two main forms of disease, distinguished by low and high extremes of virulence. The low form causes only mild symptoms (messed-up feathers, a drop in egg production) and may easily go undetected. The highly pathogenic form is far more harmful. It spreads very rapidly through poultry flocks and causes disease affecting internal organs and almost 100% death within 48 hours.
Moving to the second point, do migratory birds spread highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses?
Well, ladies and gentlemen, the role of migratory birds in the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza is not fully understood. Wild waterfowl are considered the natural reservoir of all influenza A viruses. They are known to carry viruses of the H5 and H7 subtypes, but usually in the low pathogenic form. Considerable circumstantial evidence suggests that migratory birds can introduce low pathogenic H5 and H7 viruses to poultry flocks, which then mutate to the highly pathogenic form. Recent events make it likely that some migratory birds are now directly spreading the H5N1 virus in its highly pathogenic form.
Now, what is special about the current outbreaks in poultry? The current outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza began in South-East Asia in mid-2003. The outbreaks are the largest and most severe on record. Never before in the history of this disease have so many countries been simultaneously affected, resulting in the loss of so many birds.
Ladies and Gentlemen, many countries have been affected by the spread of the viruses. By the way, which countries have been affected by the outbreaks in poultry?
From mid-December 2003 through early February 2004, the H5N1 virus outbreaks were reported in eight Asian nations. The countries are the Republicof Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Indonesia, and China. Most of these countries had never before experienced an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in their histories.
Well, let me now discuss the implications for human health.The continual spread of H5N1 in poultry populations creates two main risks for human health. The first risk is a direct infection when the virus passes from poultry to humans, resulting in very severe disease. H5N1 virus has caused the largest number of cases of severe disease and death in humans. The common symptoms are primary viral pneumonia and multi-organ failure. In the present outbreak, more than half of those infected with the virus have died. Most cases have occurred in healthy children and young adults. A second risk, of even greater concern, is that the virus will change into a form that is highly infectious for humans and spreads easily from person to person. Such a change could mark the start of a global outbreak.
            Ladies and Gentlemen, to end my presentation, I’d like to remind you all that bird flu is a deadly disease. The viruses that cause the disease spread very quickly. For that reason we need to act now to stop its spread

Should Students Take Part Time Jobs?
Working and going to school is challenging, it can be a rewarding experience if you use some foresight. However, you’d better think a hundred times before you decide to take a part time job. There are a lot of things that should be factored in on the decision to take a part time job.
On the negative side, working and still maintaining a good grade at school is not an easy task. Having less time for schoolwork becomes the main negative effect. Consequently, many students who work part time fail to perform at their best both on schoolwork and on examinations.
Moreover, a part- time job can really interfere with the students’ free time. It also cuts into their studies and/or social life.On the positive side of things, a part time job helps students to support day to day living expenses. Working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibly. Students can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money. In most cases, they can acquire a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences. Another benefit
of part- time work is the opportunity to expand the resume. Ideally, a student should try to find a job that is related in some way to his/her selected field of study. But even not, a student can still gain some work experience and develop skills.

Finally, if you are considering working parttime, talk to your school counsellor to discuss this move. Mobile Phones: Good or Bad?
Everywhere you go nowadays, you see people using mobile phones. From school children to retired people, you see them talking in the supermarket, on trains, in the street, everywhere!
So what are the advantages of mobile phones?
First of all, they are very convenient because you can phone from nearly anywhere. Another advantage is that they are really useful in emergency situations. For example, if you are alone in your car and it breaks down, you can get help quickly. In addition, you can also use your mobile to text your friends or connect to the Net.
However, there are also disadvantages such as the cost. Mobile phone calls cost more than normal calls. Furthermore, it can be annoying if you are on a train or a bus and you have to listen to someone else’s boring conversation. Finally, people can contact you anywhere, at any time, unless you switch your phone off!
In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I feel mobile phones are a good thing because they give us more freedom and make communication easier.

National Exam in Pros and Cons

National exam becomes the hot topic in most of discussions. Though the Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by the government on the organization of the national exams, the controversy over whether it is necessary to maintain the national exams (UN) has continued. Some debates include the primary questions such as; does the quality of Indonesiaeducation depend on the national exam?, will the quality of the Indonesian education system worsen without natipnal exam?

A few years ago, distance learning was seen as an inferior way but nowadays even famous and established traditional colleges and universities are providing distance learning courses and it is generally considered a way to improve one’s life.
However, people still argue whether distance learning give more advantage or disadvantage. Some of them who see the benefit of distance learning will say that distance learning needs no commuting. Of course it saves money and time that students would take. Furthermore, distance learning can be done at any student’s convenience. Mostly of the classes of distance learning are asynchronous. It means that students do not have to attend a lecture at a fixed particular time and place. Students can review the assignments and do their homework during off-hours or from home. Additionally, distance learning gives more accessibility. No one can deny it.
 People with limited mobility may encounter the problem when they take traditional class. With the online class system, the problem is absent.
Despite the many advantages, the other people will see that distance learning is costly and needs complex technology. To attend online learning, student must have a computer with possibly access to the internet. Admitted or not, such technology devices are not always available for common students.
 Another disadvantage of distance learning is that it does not provide immediate feedback. Unlikely traditional classroom, students have to wait for the feedback and comment until the instructor has review the works and sent response to them. Most of the time students will study alone. Distance learners may feel isolated or miss that social physical interaction that comes with attending a traditional classroom

Hacking: Pro and Contra?
Do you know what a hacker is? Well, a hacker is a person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems on computers and they like to stretch the capability of the systems. And you know what, the activities they do in the computers are called ‘hacking’.
So, what’s the problem with ‘hacking and its hackers’? Well, the problem is whether ‘hacking and its hackers’ is legal or illegal? What I mean is that people in the world have many different views about hacking and the hackers. Some of them take sides, but many object.
To get back to what I was saying previously, let us see the positive points of a hacker, shall we? Although in most places breaking into computer systems is considered illegal, I believe that hackers don’t do anything illegal because they only want to know and try the systems. I dare to say that a hacker likes finding the strengths and the weaknesses of a computer system. They feel proud if they can find the weaknesses. So I don’t really see the crimes in this case. In addition, these hackers sometimes help the police catch the ‘white collar criminals’, such as bank robbers, money launderers, credit card forgers. For example, in 2000, the U.S. hackers caught some Singaporean hackers who made ‘Virus Love’ to break up the programs of the U.S. National Security system.
Nevertheless, those who object to the good points of a hacker say that hacking is a crime. The reason is that some hackers use their brilliant skills to break into banks and other vital institutions where they can get money, destroy information, and the worst thing is they can get secret information and sell it to another country. This is a treachery.
Take for example, in 1994, The U.S. government broke a conspiracy of computer hackers out of Majorca, Spain. These hackers were responsible for accessing and eliminating 190,000 telephone credit card numbers over computer bulletin boards in Americaand Europe. Seeing this fact, I don’t blame those who think negatively about hackers.
To put the whole thing in a nut shell, I personally think that hackers are not bad people with their brilliant skills. However, they could be bad because of money orientation to get the wealth. That’s just the point.

Homeschooling is an alternative way to educate our kids beside sending them to public school. Homeschooling is becoming more popular every day. There are about two million children currently learning at home. However it has some advantages and disadvantages.
Parents choose homeschooling to educate their kids because they believe that homeschooling can be a personalized schedule. Home schooling allows parents and children to work out a schedule that will best work for the child.
Another advantage is flexibility in time and curriculum. By home schooling parents can set the curriculum around vacation, illnesses, and other surprise event.

Giving Children Homework; Pro and Con
There are a lot of discussion as to whether children should be given homework or not. Is it enough for children having time to study at school or needing additional time in home for study after school time?
Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They also argue that children have their hobbies which they want to do after school, such as sport or music. A further point they make is that a lot of homeworks are pointless and does not help the children learn at all.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Parents and teachers argue that it is important to find out whether children can work on their own without the support from the teacher. They say that the evening is a good time for children to sit down and think about what they have learned in school.
Furthermore they claim that the school day is too short to get anything done. It makes sense to send home tasks like independent reading or further writing task which do not need the teacher support.

Computer, tablet, mobile phone, and other devices connected to Internet have been the most outstanding innovation in the history of mankind. As with every single innovation, internet has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The target of internet has always been the communication. By the advent of computer’s Internet, our earth has reduced and has attained the form of a global village. Now we can communicate in a fraction of second with a person who is sitting in the other parts of the world. Should Abortion be Legal?

The debate over whether or not abortion should be a legal option continues to divide Americans long after the US Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision on Roe v. Wade declared the procedure a “fundamental right” on Jan. 22, 1973.
Proponents, identifying themselves as pro-choice, contend that abortion is a right that should not be limited by governmental or religious authority, and which outweighs any right claimed for an embryo or fetus. They argue that pregnant women will resort to unsafe illegal abortions if there is no legal option.
A fetus is not a human being. Abortion is terminating a pregnancy, not a baby. Personhood at conception is not a proven biological fact. Personhood begins at birth. Fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when an abortion is performed according to Stuart W. G. Derbyshire, PhD, Senior Lecturer at the Universityof Birmingham (England).
Access to legal, professionally-performed abortions reduces injury and death caused by unsafe illegal abortions. The World Health Organization estimated in 2006 that “back-alley” abortions cause 68,000 maternal deaths each year in countries where abortion is not legal.
Modern abortion procedures are safe. The risk of a woman’s death from abortion is less than one in 100,000. Whereas the risk of a woman dying from giving birth is 13.3 deaths per 100,000 pregnancies.
Opponents, identifying themselves as pro-life, assert that personhood begins at conception, and therefore abortion is the immoral killing of an innocent human being. They say abortion inflicts suffering on the unborn child, and that it is unfair to allow abortion when couples who cannot biologically conceive are waiting to adopt.
Unborn babies are innocent human beings from the moment of conception. They have a fundamental right to life, which must be protected. Fetuses feel pain during an abortion according to Kanwaljeet J. Moreover the Declaration of Independence states that “All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Libertyand the pursuit of Happiness.” Allowing abortion directly contradicts the Founding Fathers’ intentions for an inalienable right to life in this country.
Women should use contraceptives, not abortion, to prevent unwanted pregnancies. A Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study showed that 19-25% of women who received abortions in 2006 had previously had one or more abortions. If abortion were not available, women would not be so care.

The popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Classmates.com more than quadrupled from 2005 to 2009. Many users say the sites are good for our society, but others contend that the dangers of social media outweigh the benefits.
Proponents of social networking sites argue that these online communities promote increased communication with friends and family, familiarize people with valuable computer skills, and allow contact with people from around the world.
Social networking sites allow people to create new relationships and reconnect with friends and family. Increased communication, even online, strengthens relationships.
Social networking sites allow for creative expression in a new medium. They provide free messaging, blogging, photo storage, games, event invitations, and many other services to anyone with access to a computer and the Internet.
Social networking sites bring people with common interest together, offer exposure to new ideas from around the world, and lower inhibitions to overcome social anxiety. People who have a difficulty communicating in person are more comfortable interacting via the Internet.
Mean while the opponents argue that social networking sites expose children to predators, increase vulnerability to computer viruses, lower worker productivity, and promote narcissism and short attention spans.
Social networking sites entice people to spend more time online and less time interacting face-to-face. The sites offer many time wasting activities that supplant more productive activities. Teens spend an average of nine hours per week on social networking sites.
Teens growing up with these sites may not be aware that the information they post is public and that photos and text can be retrieved even after deletion. Consequences from over-sharing personal information include vulnerability to sexual or financial predators and lost job opportunities from employers finding embarrassing photos or comments.
Social networking sites have no way to verify that people are who they claim to be, leaving people vulnerable to solicitations from online predators who are able to mask their true identities. In Feb. 2009, MySpace identified 90,000 registered sex offenders with profiles on the site, while Facebook declined to reveal how many were present on its site. Even if the sites agree to remove sex offenders, they cannot identify all of them or stop them from creating new accounts.
As social networking sites become more integrated in our modern culture, some people think that the benefits outweigh any downsides, while others believe the dangers are more pressing than any upsides.
